Summary:

We are the water protectors is a children's book with beautiful images about how important it is to protect the Earth's Water. This book is written from the perspective of a young girl who talks about how her culture values water and believes that it is sacred. Throughout the story there is mention of the black snake that is coming and is going to spoil the water. The little girl and her people rally together to stand up to the black snake. In the last few pages a huge group of people is depicted protesting the black snake to protect their waters.

Personal Response:

I really enjoyed this book and thought it had a beautiful message. In the middle of the story there was talk about fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves. The pictures show different types of animals that thrive from the water but I also thought about how in real life the "adults" try to protect the "kids." I think in the same way that the little girl and her people were trying to protect the animals that benefit from the water those who are older try to protect those who are younger and cent defend for themselves. This book has beautiful pictures and a great message about how important it is to protect the earth as well as protecting those who cant protect themselves.

In this text I think it shows that anyone has the power to make choice for a better world. The little girl is the main character in the story and she is shown teaming up with her grandmother and the other people in her tribe to stand up to the "black snake." She is young but she already understands that she can use her voice to stand up for those who don't have a voice. This little girl decided to use her voice to stand up to the people who wanted to spoil the water and make it harmful for those who benefit from it. When I use this book in my classroom I want to show my students that they can use their voice to stand up for what they feel strongly about to try and make a change. I want to use the example in the book about standing up for the earth like the little girl did to spark a conversation about how important the earth is to us and what it can provide for us. This conversation can be a connection to everything people are doing to protect the earth and even the history of Earth Day. I hope that this kind of conversation will be helpful as some of my students might be interested in being some sort of scientist that works with the earth and its ecosystems. That kind of career isn't always the most glamorous or represented the most but there are still children out there who could be interested in it.
